CHARLESTON, S.C.-- Charleston Mayor Joe Riley said it's hard to understand the magnitude of loss after nine firefighters died in a blaze at a furniture store Monday night.
Riley said the firefighters were "brave, heroic, courageous" and died carrying out their duties.
The bodies were taken to the Medical University of South Carolina for positive identification. Riley said the names will be released after the identities are confirmed.
Two employees were rescued from the blaze, which started about 7 o'clock Monday night at the Sofa Super Store and warehouse.
Riley called the loss of so many firefighters "unbelievable."
The mayor said there is no indication of arson. He said it appears to have started in a storage area in the back of the store.
State and federal officials are investigating.
